“Fool Me Once”: Engaging Mystery Thriller on Netflix

Sometimes, a TV series captures one’s attention with its layered complexity. Cliffhangers at the end of each episode aren’t patronizing but truly propel the main plot forward. The main mystery is slowly revealed while exposing other strands of the plot that are hinted at throughout the series. The satisfaction comes when all of the disparate strands are fused into a powerful climax at the series ending. This is my experience with the Netflix series “Fool Me Once".

The main protagonist is Maya Stern, a recently widowed mother who has also been discharged from her military role for unrevealed reasons. In addition, we learn that Maya’s sister Claire had been murdered in the months before the killing of her husband, Joe. Her life is in transition as she fights to stabilize her routine for herself and her daughter. A saving grace through this series of traumas is that her husband’s wealthy family provided a nanny for her young daughter.

In a flashback, we see a friend gift Maya with an electronic picture frame fitted with a hidden camera. Maya can log into the camera feed to check on her daughter being watched by the nanny. On one occasion while viewing the camera feed in the present, Maya sees her husband playing…
