“I’m Just Here So I Don’t Get Fined.”

The obligatory Medium earnings rant.

Alright. I’ll jump onboard the Medium commentary train with this piece. For full transparency, empirical evidence has shown me that I’m not a top writer on this platform. Though I have almost 1,000 followers, I’m curious about many of their reading habits because I don’t see consistent comments and claps from the following. You see, if I hit double-digits in earnings on Medium, I consider celebrating…at McDonald’s…from the dollar menu.

It wasn’t always like this for me. When I joined Medium in mid-2020, I slowly built up a repertoire of stories and readers that gave me some traction under the old financial algorithm. Whatever way the formula for recommendations operated, I would receive a consistent one or two-digit sum at the end of each month. By mid-2021, I was feeling confident about my prospects of advancing into a higher echelon of Medium writers.

I’ve read about these “stellar" writers on this platform who pocket three to four-digit earnings on a bad month! They post screenshots that don’t look photoshopped as proof of the traffic they draw. I always wonder what six-lane freeway they finagled a spot nearby to attract so much attention? Do they mine the three taboo topics of social gatherings… money, religion/sex, & politics… for their stories to accomplish their…
